Formal proposal for documentary

Roll with it Formal proposal

Topic

The documentary we have chosen to produce is about bowling. Within our project we have chosen to speak about the history of bowling, how it appeals to the younger audience, why people go bowling and whether people use it for sport or social reasons.

Type of Documentary

The type of documentary we will be producing is a mixed documentary. We have chosen to do this because we think it will be most effective using a mixed combination of interview observation and narration.

Style of Documentary

We have chosen to construct an informal documentary for our bowling project. We have decided to do this because our main target audience is of a younger and less mature audience so using an informal approach to our documentary would suit them more.

Channel and Scheduling

In relation to channel and scheduling, we decided that Channel 4 was the most suitable and relevant channel for our bowling documentary. This is because we share the same target audience as Channel 4’s already establish audience base. We also decided that our documentary would air between 6pm and 9pm as this is the most likely time that our target audience would tune in because it’s the prime time for our target audience. Between the 6pm to 9pm gap, we have decided to screen our programme at 7pm. This is because we think we could anchor a large number of our target audience if we hammock our programme in between Hollyoaks and the Channel 4 News. We will air our documentary on Thursday 9th January 2014 and it will air for approximately 27 minutes including adverts.

Target Audience

The target audience we have chosen to aim our documentary towards is male and female aged between 16-30 years of age. We chose this certain group of people specifically because we believe that bowling is most popular with people of this age. We also believe this target audience would be most suited to our documentary as they will have more interest in the subject at hand.

Primary Research needed

We are going to get in touch with Riverside Bowling alley and potentially interview the manager of the bowling alley, technicians who work within the complex and league members. The misé-en-scene for our documentary will be in the bowling alley which will feature the bowling lanes, the eating area, the bar area, the back of the machines, arcades and the laser quest.

Secondary Research

We will find out the history of bowling, when it first started and how it made it’s from over to the UK from America and how it’s used to socialise. We will be including archive material including; footage from a bowling league from the 1960’s and an old article which talks about the victory of ten pin bowling. We will also be filming posters and photographs which feature the bowling league that play at Riverside Bowling. We will also be adding music to our documentary as well as including clips of films that feature bowling such as Grease 2.

Narrative Structure

Our documentary “Roll with it” will be an open documentary. This is because we think it will have more of an effect on the audience if we left the audience at the end of our product thinking of their own conclusions instead of making it closed. Our documentary will be a linear narrative as it will follow a chronological order.

Outline of Content

Our plan of attack is to research the history of bowling, how it has been modernized and how people use the sport to socialise today. Firstly, we will film at our local bowling alley in which we will find out why people go bowling, who they go bowling with. We will also interview members of the public, people that bowl for a sport and the manager of the bowling alley. We will also record what people do as well when they come bowling.
